Nigerians Brace for Telecom Tariff Hike

The Federal Government has announced plans to increase telecom tariffs, but has rejected the proposed 100% hike. The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, made this known after a stakeholders' meeting with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Abuja.

The MNOs had proposed a 100% increase in tariffs, citing rising operational costs. However, the government aims to strike a balance between protecting consumers and ensuring the sustainability of telecom companies.

"The NCC will soon come up with a clear directive on how we will go about the tariff increase," Tijani said. "We want to protect our people, but also ensure that these companies can continue to invest significantly."

The NCC is expected to announce the new tariffs soon, following ongoing consultations and engagements with stakeholders.
